Short Description
Collaborate with fellow team members and university technology transfer/outreach professionals to identify fruitful projects for Tera Open Science Team Members
Long Description
Most public universities have technology transfer and outreach programs. However, many of them are limited in scope in terms of the opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to materially participate in the programs that reside within the Technology Transfer offices. Further, early stage opportunities are generally not well supported. This project would support multiple teams, and each team would work with 1 to 4 university Technology Transfer offices to identify potential projects. The Technology Transfer offices could also make connections for the team for promising research within these universities that may represent early stage projects where the team, or successor TOS teams, could directly work with professors to refine project opportunities. The initial teams would consist of one or more STEM majors/graduate students and at least one marketing resource, preferably a marketing resource with an interest in technology and new products or applications. The deliverables for the teams would be a set of opportunity analyses along with a proposed path forward, laying out the next steps required to launch one or more TOS programs.
Potential Applications
A wide variety of applications are possible at this stage. However, the project opportunities should take into consideration the needs of the universities and the likelihood that the TOS teams will not always be in one place. It could easily arise that the TOS team would be principally connected to undergraduate/graduate students from one institution, but many of the teams may wind up being located in many places.
Open Questions
The principle open questions are:
1) What universities should the team(s) focus on? How will the team engage with the university?
2) At what point in a professor's research can an eventual TOS project team make a significant contribution?
3) What are the barriers to gaining access to the university Tech Transfer offices and the university professors
4) What constitutes a promising project from the university's perspective, the professor's perspective, the TOS team members perspective, and TOS's perspective?
5) What are the intellectual property issues?
