Beyond answering questions, artificial intelligence is moving from a chatbot to a broader alternative that can also take action. As we move towards 2027, this shift may change the way humans approach complex problems using AI. Technologies driving this shift include AI Agents, multimodal AI, and world models.
AI Agents
Next-generation AI agents (https://www.nature.com/articles/s43586-026-00534-y) can manage multiple steps in a workflow by browsing information, using digital tools, and coordinating tasks. They reduce the work for humans by performing repetitive tasks. For example, AI agents can provide customized customer support by searching company files and responding without human intervention. This raises concerns about errors and misuse, which is where AI governance comes into play.
Multimodal AI
Just like humans combine what they see, hear, and read to understand the environment around them, multimodal AI (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2409.18142) systems can process a combination of information in text, image, video, and audio. With multimodal systems, humans can interact with AI rather than just typing questions, which could be used in medicine, education, and scientific research.
World Models
A world model (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s44163-026-02122-1) learns from images, videos, and sensor data and predicts the possible outcomes even before an action is taken. Imagine a robot reaching a table with several objects on it. Before moving an object, it uses a simulated model of its surroundings to predict what will happen when it moves a particular object. This is highly valuable for robotics and autonomous vehicles that operate in unpredictable environments
AI in the Physical and Scientific world
AI is now integrating with systems that can sense, move, and respond to their surroundings, like robots. While a chatbot mistake doesn’t affect the physical world, a robot must combine perception, movement, and decision-making to avoid serious real-world damage. This could transform manufacturing, logistics, transportation, and healthcare by enabling machines to perform tasks in changing physical environments. However, there is a need for safety and appropriate governance of such physical AIÂ (https://www.nature.com/articles/s42256-026-01239-3) systems.
Scientists use machine learning models to analyze large, complex datasets and identify patterns and problems that are difficult to detect manually. From drug discovery (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41573-026-01496-2) and materials science to astronomy and neuroscience, AI models support researchers in ways that go far beyond being a research assistant.
The technology landscape of 2027 will be a combination of AI agents, multimodal systems, world models, physical AI, and AI-assisted scientific discoveries. However, their success depends on privacy, cybersecurity, human oversight, and reliability.
