The Importance of Space Exploration for Human Life on Earth
By Logha Nandhini Murugeas
The curiosity about who we are, why we are on Earth, and what lies beyond Earth drives us toward space exploration. Space-based technologies have become an integral part of our day-to-day life. For instance, the GPS we use today, which provides location data via satellites, was originally used for satellite-based positioning and navigation systems that tracked satellites from Earth.
Improving Everyday Life
Satellite systems aid in communication, navigation, weather monitoring, and observing Earth from space. By providing continuous data on Earth’s atmospheric changes, they help scientists to predict and track cyclones, storms, and floods. They also assess the damage caused by natural disasters and identify areas that are unobservable from the ground.
Advancing Agriculture
Satellite observations assist farmers and agricultural scientists by providing information about vegetation, crop health, water availability, and soil conditions. They use this information to identify the regions affected by drought or pests and improve water and other resource management. Research on growing food in harsh conditions for astronauts in space could provide insights into food production in challenging environments on Earth.
Understanding Human Health
In biomedical research, space exploration provides valuable findings about the effects of microgravity on the human body. Studying bone loss, muscle atrophy, and other cardiovascular changes caused by microgravity helps scientists develop methods to prevent and manage these conditions for astronauts and potentially benefit people with similar conditions on Earth. Technologies developed to track and monitor the health of astronauts from Earth, like the Bio-monitor and rHEALTH one bio-analyzer, can be useful for patients on Earth in remote areas.
Fostering International Collaboration
Space exploration fosters collaboration among several countries despite their cultural differences. International Space Station includes space agencies from Canada, Japan, Russia, the United States, and the European Space Agency. This shows how countries work together and share expertise to advance space exploration for the benefit of humanity. In addition to protecting Earth from dangers in space, space exploration also helps scientists discover environments that could benefit human survival beyond Earth.
It inspires students, researchers, and engineers to innovate lightweight, reliable, energy-efficient systems that could perform in extreme environments in space, which could later be utilized on Earth. Space exploration is therefore not simply about leaving Earth and exploring outer space, but about understanding, protecting, and improving the quality of human life on Earth.
