The AI Paradox: How Students Can Learn Smarter Without Losing The Power To Think

AI provides detailed explanations and personalized support for students. However, the main question is: do students know how to use AI without compromising their own thinking ability? Studies (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s40561-024-00316-7#Sec33) have shown that overdependence on AI affects students’ core cognitive skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical reasoning, and decision-making. Let’s look at how a student can use AI in their learning process without letting it affect their thinking.
Study Partner
One of the best ways students can use AI is as a study partner. When a student finds a concept difficult, AI can provide simple, detailed explanations at different levels of complexity. For example, a biology student can use AI to explain the functions of a human cell with a day-to-day example followed by questions or quizzes to test their understanding.
Personal Tutor
Research (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-97652-6) shows that using AI as a personal tutor helps students learn more quickly than in a traditional classroom. Some students are fast learners, while some require additional support. Based on their needs, students can use AI as a personal tutor to provide more practice questions, quizzes, study plans, flashcards, etc.
Writing & Research Assistant
Students can use AI to get an outline before writing and for feedback and suggestions to improve their writing. For research, AI can help to brainstorm and organise ideas. However, they must verify all information given by AI, as they are prone to errors. This skill of verifying information given by AI is essential for students.
Recent research (shttps://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666920X26000330) hows the impact of AI on cognitive abilities of students depends on how the students use AI. Instead of asking for answers, students can use it as a reflective tool to identify their knowledge gaps and to evaluate their understanding. They must continue developing critical cognitive skills like critical thinking, creativity, empathy, ethical reasoning, curiosity, and problem-solving. While AI can generate ten different solutions to a problem, students must have the skill to identify the ethical, practical, and appropriate solution. Research suggests that responsible use of AI can improve students’ language skills and academic achievement. The future of learning is not about following traditional classroom learning or AI-assisted learning, but about students using AI responsibly while continuing to develop core human skills that cannot be replaced by any technology.
